The first paragraph is actually an observation by Rose, but Kai and I have discussed this sort of thing many a time. I made this observation on my Facebook page after a friend shared a link to a book that he'd been reading. The book is called The Language of God by Dr. Francis Collins.
I honestly don't think that science and the so-called "paranormal" or "divine" are exclusive. I think it's all part of nature. There are just some parts of nature that we don't yet understand. Once we would have laughed at the idea of people going to the moon. Now it's a given. A true scientist keeps an open mind.
I would like to take the opportunity to allow Kai to share his thoughts on the matter so you can get to know him and his way of expressing himself.
All things are energy. This is a truism recognized by scientists everywhere in the modern age. A living body generates energy. This we can observe, both with our eyes and with instruments. Now, when this body dies, this energy is no longer generated. Where does it go?
It is a truism that energy does not cease to exist, it only changes form. The energy that is the life force thus DOES NOT CEASE TO EXIST.
Now, understand if you will, that there is energy generated from a body decaying, or being reduced to ash by cremation. But this is only the energy as it relates to the physical body. Again, where does the energy of the life force go?
This life force is the vehicle for the Spirit when the life of the physical body ceases. It is energy. It is measured as electricity. It can be measured on the instruments used by ghost hunters or such.
Thus, there are many beings that exist only as energy. Some once had physical bodies. Some never did.
All religions are wrong and yet all contain a grain of truth. There is something that survives the death of the physical body. There are intelligences which were always purely energy.
For anyone to assume that only their system of belief has the answer to what follows the death of the body is quite arrogant. It is a similar arrogance as believing that life only exists on this one planet out of the whole universe. And it is also statistically most unlikely.
To have no belief in religion is not the same as to have no belief in anything beyond physical life. It is not necessary to have faith in any religion. Religions were created by humans. One either agrees or disagrees with the school of thought attributed to these philosophies. Although such a philosophy can work as a guide to help one make good personal decisions in their life, perhaps, and to have a moral code, to be a slave to any particular creed is folly.
There are as well individuals whose refusal to consider belief in anything beyond the physical world. Their belief in non-belief is in itself a religion though they would probably not like to call it this. It is also equally unscientific. A scientist keeps the mind open to possibility and discovery. The minds of these individuals is as closed as the mind of an individual who clings to their bible--a work written by human beings--and attributes to this book absolute divinity. Enslavement to either blind faith or blind nihilism creates a closed universe for the follower thereof.
It is not that I encourage anyone to give up their religion or to feel the need to follow a religion. I only feel that to have an attitude of openness and tolerance is the best way to a happier--and more interesting--experience for all.
